Erasure - Houston 2014

Erasure brought their synth-pop magic to Houston's Bayou Music Center on October 10 and 11, 2014, as part of The Violet Flame Tour. Andy Bell and Vince Clarke were touring behind The Violet Flame, giving Houston fans a chance to hear new material alongside a deep collection of the band's biggest electronic-pop hits.

The Houston shows were classic Erasure in the best sense: bright synthesizers, emotional vocals, infectious melodies, and a setlist that balanced dance-floor energy with some of the duo's more dramatic material. Bell remained the commanding frontman, while Clarke's electronic arrangements provided the musical foundation that has defined Erasure since the 1980s.

The show opened with “Oh L'amour,” immediately followed by “Star” and “Reason.” “Breath of Life,” “You Surround Me,” “Elevation,” and “I Lose Myself” continued the early run, mixing songs from The Violet Flame with favorites from across the band's career.

The middle of the performance was packed with Erasure staples. “Drama!,” “Victim of Love,” “Ship of Fools,” “Sacred,” “Breathe,” and “Joan” showed how much musical ground the duo had covered. “Blue Savannah” and “Chorus” then shifted the mood back toward the band's irresistible dance-pop side.

The final stretch was essentially a greatest-hits celebration. “Love to Hate You” and “A Little Respect” gave the Houston crowd two of Erasure's most recognizable songs, while “Chains of Love” brought the main set to a huge finish.

The encore was short but perfectly chosen. Bell and Clarke returned for “Always” and “Sometimes,” ending the night with two songs that represent the emotional and melodic sides of Erasure particularly well. The same 20-song setlist was performed across the Houston dates and several nearby shows on the tour.

What made the Houston concerts special was the combination of an intimate venue and a remarkably deep catalog. Erasure could have easily filled a set with nothing but hits, but The Violet Flame material fit comfortably beside songs that were already decades old.

For fans at Bayou Music Center, the 2014 Erasure show was a celebration of synth-pop that never sounded dated. With Vince Clarke creating the electronic backbone and Andy Bell delivering the songs with his unmistakable voice and stage presence, the Houston performances demonstrated why Erasure had remained one of Britain's most durable electronic-pop duos.
